Dr. Shane Houston

Dr Shane Houston is a proud Gangulu man from central Queensland. He has been actively engaged in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advancement for nearly 50 years. He has worked in community, national and international settings, including various United Nations related activities and in the World Council of Indigenous Peoples.


Shane has a long-standing interest in the development of culturally competent services and systems, and in health economics – especially in finding greater fairness in how systems allocate and use resources.  Shane holds a PhD from Curtin University and has held senior roles in the government, higher education and community sectors.


His experience in national organisations and in national strategy and community development reflects a long-standing engagement in Torres Strait Islander needs and culture both for people living on the mainland and in the Torres Strait.
